What are your chances of winning?
When you guess one number out of 49, your odds are 1/49. When you make a second guess (and the previous ball is not replaced) the odds change to 1/48. And so on.
If you choose six numbers from the pool of 49, then the probability that ONE of them is the same as the first number drawn is 6/49 (each one of the six choices has a 1/49 chance). The probability for drawing the second number correctly is 5/48, and so on. The probability of choosing all six numbers correctly is:
6/49 x 5/48 x 4/47 x 3/46 x 2/45 x 1/44 = 1/13,983,816
That is one chance out of almost 14 million to select the winning combination.
If you selected one 6 digit combination per day for 13,983,816 days (that's over 38,000 YEARS!!) you might select a winning number!
Here's an analogy that brings things closer to home: The population of the entire state of Michigan is less than 14 million. Told that one person in the entire state was holding a special coupon for $5 million, could you point to their exact location on a map? Quite a challenge.
